Get a little culture this weekend
From the Empty Space Theater in Bakersfield comes a weekend chock-full of performances. First up is Super Villian!
The world mourns the death of Earth’s greatest super hero, Excelsior… but no one is more upset than The Remote, the super villain that spent his life fighting Excelsior, but was not the one to kill him. Without a super hero to fight, The Remote is no longer seen as a super villain, just a fool in a silly costume. With help from his friends, The Remote must pull himself up from rock bottom if he is ever to be known as a super villain again.
Winner of 8 awards and rave reviews, James Kopp’s comic book comedy, Super Villain, swings back to The Empty Space with new scenes for one encore weekend, running for two nights only, Feb. 5th & 6th at 8 PM. Statewide Event to Repeal Prop 8
Are you one of 1,000?
On Saturday, February 6th, 2010 people from across the state will come together in unison to take action in repealing Proposition 8 and restoring marriage equality in California. This will be the biggest statewide event planned to gather 100,000+ signatures to repeal Proposition 8 in a single day! It’s a hefty challenge, but it’s one that we are ready to take on. If we have 1,000 volunteers and they each collect 100 signatures, we’ve met our goal. This is your chance to prove that you’re serious about equality. Every day that goes by is another day that we allow discrimination to be written into the constitution. It doesn’t matter what your sexual orientation is. It doesn’t matter what your political party affiliation is. Race doesn’t matter, and neither does gender, religion, age, etc. This is a human issue. It’s an equality issue, and equality knows no bounds.
Say it ain’t so…
Well I apparently got ahead of myself. Last week the Hawaii State Senate overwhelmingly passed a bill that would have let them join California and Washington in being dangerously close to granting full rights to all of its citizens. So all that was left was for the State House to pass it as well then they’d be on their way.
So, of course, given that it’s an election year and that Democrats across the nation are feeling skittish (even though people really don’t like Republicans) the House decided to suspend debate indefinitely. Oh and they did so without a roll call which means there’ s no way to know who voted to avoid the issue. Way to punt guys, obviously your electoral concerns are more important than, y’know, doing the right thing or giving people their rights.
“This Saturday night a benefit show for the Matthew Shepard Foundation”
I hope the Central Valley comes and supports this very good foundation. Not only will it show that the Central Valley cares, but it will also show unity among all gay and lesbians, in the whole world that we do care about others not just ourselves. So please come support Empress 36 of San Diego and friends to raise money for a wonderful foundation all money raised that is 100% will be given to the Matthew Shepard foundation. Hope to see you all there!!!!!

Civil Unions Ahoy!
Time for a little history lesson. Massachusetts get a lot of press for being the first state to have same-sex marriage but actually that’s not entirely true. Hawai’i legalized it first… way back in 1993. Unfortunately, there was a constitutional amendment passed 6 years later that banned it. However, now it seems that that Hawai’i is getting back on the marriage equality train as their state senate has overwhelmingly passed a civil unions bill, 18 to 7:
The state Senate today passed a civil-unions bill, sending a strong message to the state House and Gov. Linda Lingle with a veto-proof majority vote.
The vote was 18 to 7. The Senate rejected an amendment to change the effective date of the bill, which is Jan. 1, 2010.
The bill would allow same-sex and heterosexual couples to enter into civil unions and receive the same rights, benefits and responsibilities as marriage under state law.
The state House passed a civil-unions bill last session that would only apply to same-sex couples. House leaders have said they would wait and see what the Senate vote was before deciding whether to move forward on the Senate version of the bill.
An overflow crowd filled the Senate gallery for the debate, with many supporters of the bill wearing rainbow colored lei and many opponents dressed in white T-shirts.
White T-shirts…. Really? That’s the best you guys can come up with? I know we queers can be awfully bright and flamboyant sometimes but I really don’t think that the right counter to that is to be drab and boring. Or maybe they just can’t help themselves… Ah well.
Help for Haiti
So if you haven’t heard already there is a great way to help the relief efforts in Haiti. You can simply text “Haiti” to 90999 on your cell phone and a $10 donation will be made to the Red Cross on your behalf and put on your cell phone bill. We just wanted to pass this information along. Kudos to the NFL for posting this information during every playoff game this weekend.
In Earthquake News…
Somehow I missed the disaster in Haiti until right now. Unfortunately today was also the day that a lot of political commentators got a hold of it and did what they do best: take an awful human tragedy and twist into something even worse.
We have this quote from Rush Limbaugh:
I could sit here and be really cynical. I’ll hold off on the cynicism for a couple hours, I’ll hold off on it. I’m going to hold off on it, give the show’s flow a chance to establish, ’cause it’s going to be the Media Tweak of the Day.
….Yes, I think in the Haiti earthquake, ladies and gentlemen — in the words of Rahm Emanuel — we have another crisis simply too good to waste. This will play right into Obama’s hands. He’s humanitarian, compassionate. They’ll use this to burnish their, shall we say, “credibility” with the black community — in the both light-skinned and dark-skinned black community in this country. It’s made-to-order for them. That’s why he couldn’t wait to get out there, could not wait to get out there.
And then there’s this little gem from Pat Robertson:
And, you know, Kristi, something happened a long time ago in Haiti, and people might not want to talk about it. They were under the heel of the French. You know, Napoleon III and whatever. And they got together and swore a pact to the devil. They said, “We will serve you if you will get us free from the French.” True story. And so, the devil said, “OK, it’s a deal.”
And they kicked the French out. You know, the Haitians revolted and got themselves free. But ever since, they have been cursed by one thing after the other. Desperately poor. That island of Hispaniola is one island. It’s cut down the middle. On the one side is Haiti; on the other side is the Dominican Republic. Dominican Republic is prosperous, healthy, full of resorts, et cetera. Haiti is in desperate poverty. Same island. They need to have and we need to pray for them a great turning to God. And out of this tragedy, I’m optimistic something good may come. But right now, we’re helping the suffering people, and the suffering is unimaginable.
So from two of the biggest conservative blowhards we have that the earthquake in Haiti, which practically demolished everything, is both a political boon for Obama (with African-Americans specifically mind you, us non-black people couldn’t possibly think highly of someone for rushing to the rescue of a country that has had some of the worst luck ever and just as they start getting on their feet have the freaking EARTH ripped out from under them) and that it is God’s punishment for some pact the Haitians made with the Devil to drive out Napoleon. Which of course is factually inaccurate in so many ways that it may just be a fantasy Robertson cooked up in his mind.
These statements are so outrageous that I just can’t find the words. So I’ll let Jon Stewart do it for me

Comedy Show in Bakersfield Jan 14, 2010
Gabriel Iglesias will be at the Fox Theater in Bakersfield Thursday, January 14, for two shows. See Gabriel’s tour date pages for more information.
A group from Fresno and Visalia will be driving down to see the 10pm show.
I’ve seen some of his acts online, including one filmed in Bakersfield for an HBO Special (I think it was HBO, don’t quote me on that!), and he’s a funny guy! Should be a good time for all.
